Another great year at a great school. Your humble blogger will be blogging from another school next year, and this spot will be filled by Mr. Jacob Francom of Troy, currently the director at Turning Winds Academy in the Yaak. I would like to state for the three regular readers of this blog that serving your students as their principal has been an incredible honor and privilege that I will never forget. Thank you.

Final progress reports have been mailed. Three weeks of school left to go and spring fever is in overdrive. We have a few students who will not graduate with their class if they do not pass some of the classes they are in right now.

Quarter mid-term Tuesday May 4

Mid-term grades will be calculated and posted next Tuesday. If you're not earning the grade you want, time is running out. The end of the year has field trips, three different sports, and lots of other things that distract from class time. DON'T think you will pull it out at the end. You are already out of time.

WINGS sets new record

Troy students have raised $5,703.07 in the last two weeks to support the WINGS cancer patient support fund. This is the highest amount ever raised and the competition between classes saw the Junior class as winners raising $2,127.09. Troy students have raised over $22,000 in the six years they have been raising funds. Congratulations to the students for their hard work and thanks to the contributors for supporting this very worthwhile cause.

It's CRUNCH time for Seniors!

Our percentage of graduating seniors is improving. Three years ago, four seniors failed to graduate on time, last year, three. So far this year, one. Let's see if we can keep it at just one. The one is probably the nicest, most polite student we have and we will be thrilled to have him/her back next year. If you love high school as much as I do, you can come back next year too.

Senioritis is a clinically documented ailment that can have devastating effects on those in jeopardy of not graduating with their class. Almost 100 students danced the night away to Ben Schnetter's Disco Jive. The grand march (masks required)is always a challenge to organize, and there was a ton of food, including the Main Street Perk's Italian soda bar. Troy High School's 2010 Senior Prom will be held this Saturday in the High School gym. Doors open at 8, grand march at 8:30, parents unceremoniously ejected at 9. Tickets are $12 single/$20 couple. The theme this year is 'Masquerade' and semi-formal attire is required AS WELL AS A MASK. A formal PROM DINNER is being prepared by the TROY BOOSTER CLUB and will be held at the new building up by the weigh station. Tickets are $15 each and dinner will be served from 5-7, final seating at 6.

A faculty team ramrodded by Ryan Archibald and a Roger's Electric team with trail boss Debbie Rogers joined teams from each high school class to drag their ass or kick their ass up and down the court in a single elimination tournament that saw the SOPHOMORES come out on top.

Freshmen Celebrate Coming of Spring

The Freshmen boys thought a lunchtime campout would be a good way to welcome the month that brings us springtime. They made hot dogs and smores, sat around a virtual campfire, and told hunting stories. The girls thought this whole idea was too silly to be a part of, but Carmen was brave enough to at least have her picture taken with them.

After winning their first game with Deer Lodge, your TROY TROJANS gave it up to Florence on Thursday night, and then did the same thing Friday afternoon to Valley Christian. (While they lost to Florence by 20 pts, they lost to VC by TWO!) They had a great season and deserve to be recognized for their hard work.

Art & Film Festival Rivals Cannes, Aspen, Tribeca

The first annual art a film festival saw a large turn-out of parents and students and was highly successful by any measure. In the art show, there were 102 ballots cast for best of show, with 31 different pieces of art getting at least a single vote. The top six vote getters were (in no particular order) – Pat Hickman (self portrait), Ray Morkeberg (porcupine), Ashton Geelan (painting), Victoria DeShazer (gargoyle), Gunner Jordan (elephant bank) & Marcy Kroeschel (hippo).

THS sets new record for annual food drive

Each year the THS chapter of the National Honor Society sponsors a food drive to benefit the Troy food pantry. This year, students contributed 1740 items totaling 1274 pounds, setting a record for the largest food drive ever.

98 of our 241 students made the Honor Roll this quarter by achieving a 3.0 (B) grade point average. This is a very high percentage compared to other schools in northwest Montana. Congratulations to those whose hard work is paying off.

Boy's Football had a tough schedule and fought hard for their three wins out of eight attempts. Girl's Volleyball had a tougher schedule and had to fight even harder for their six wins in nineteen tries. Win or lose, the lessons learned in competitive team sports last a lifetime. Boy's and Girl's Basketball begins November 23.

Drama Productions This Week

'Paper or Plastic', a one-act comedy, and 'The Girl Who Was Asked to Turn Blue', a one-act science-fiction drama, will be performed on the HS auditorium stage Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7 pm. Both plays will be performed both nights. Directed by Jill Dieser and Shawna Kelsey. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students.

The place to be on Sunday was the grand opening and open house of the new Troy Activity Center. A near capacity crowd heard Superintendent Brady Selle recognize and thank the people that made this project possible: the Board of Trustees, John Konzen and the Lincoln County Road crew, and the City of Troy's electrical and street crews. The open house was followed by men's and women's exhibition basketball games to break in the new floor.

Finishing one semester and beginning another are always hectic times. Because of our block schedule, each student has an entirely new set of classes. Most are adapting well to the changes.

The Montana Children's Theater is here this week and will present performances of 'Robin Hood' on Saturday at 3 pm and 7 pm in the High School auditorium. This is an amazing program and shouldn't be missed.

Troy's Varsity Football team came close to destroying Loyola's perfect record, but lost in a squeaker 6-14. Not bad for the same team that took the Trojans by 40 points just last month. The Varsity Volleyball team gave it up to T Falls and will meet Plains on Monday in the Trojan gym at 7 looking for a district berth.

National Honor Society Induction

Tuesday evening three new members were inducted into the National Honor Society. The band room was filled with families and Troy school advocates as Nikita Kuckuck, Dillon Curry, and Jake Higgins joined current members Alicia Anderson, Ashley Boothman, Hanna Folkerts, Robb Higgins, Aaron Palmer, Courtney Pils, Scott Rebo, and Liz Smith. After an entertaining and insightful rant by Mr. Bara and a brief musical interlude by Brandon and Scott Rebo, a reception was held with some of the best brownies ever made and cookies by Aaron Palmer.

Troy Students Show What They're Made Of

The High School was without power all day on Friday. Classrooms were dark and cold. But as I walked through the halls, teachers were teaching and students were learning. We had a few whiners, who though we should cancel school and go home, but the vast majority put on their jackets, moved closer to the windows and did their work. I was very proud to be their principal.

Weather was great. Parade went off on time. The new TROJAN WARRIOR stole the show. Royalty was beautiful (and not too chilled). Senior parents were honored and proud. Footballers CRUSHED the Plains Wild Horsemen and the Volleyballers slammed the Valley Christian Eagles. Now its back to the hard work of becoming literate, educated, successful Americans.

The games went off without a hitch. The Senior parents served an incredible dinner to start things off and the games were well attended with a large number of participants from each class. Powder-puff football had trouble scoring points over a 100 yd field, and the very complicated relay race took a while to set up, but worked well when run. An XXL bonfire was well-attended by the community. Students were back home by 9 pm doing their homework (they told me).

Students began float decoration over the weekend. Sunday afternoon they were in the school decorating the hallways. After intense and considered voting by a panel of judges, the BatCave (Seniors) narrowly squeezed by the Sophomore's celebration of the Incredible Hulk. Monday was cross-dressing day. Scary on several different levels. I'm not sure we want to do that again.

Parent/Teacher Conference This Wednesday

This Wednesday, October 1, is our first parent/teacher conference of the year. We will have another one in the Spring. Teachers will be in their classrooms from 6 pm until 8 pm to discuss your student's progress with you. Teachers are thrilled when parents come in, so please try to make it. We will scare up some snackies as an added inducement to attending. ALSO: we will raffle off a family pass to Troy home athletic events. See your teachers for details.

Science Lab Open House

This Thursday, from 5:30 to 7:30, to coincide with the ending of the JV games and the beginning of the varsity games, our newly remodeled science lab was open for viewing. Troy's hard-earned tax dollars paid for this project and people saw what their money has bought them. The event was well-attended with goodies provided by Ms. Haaland's culinary arts class.
